It is but Dcom tries to start it and then hangs My Computer for 30 seconds or so which is annoying.

      Somedays it worse than others.

So it's re-install the OS which I don't want to do or find some way of preventing the call.

Of course when I run process viewer the machine runs normally.

It allows you transfer pic etc from cameras and scanners. As soon as you plug a camera or scanner in the service gets installed. Sadly microshaft haven't left a way to uninstall it if it causes problems.

Dunno if you still have some USB webcam or scanner installed, but as I told you before, you might just have to plug the peripherals after xp has fully booted. Doesn't solve a damn thing except you won't have to wait the unnecessary 30sec+.

do you have a multifunction printer attached?

you can also try to edit it's security settings.

                  Well via the network yes.

Interestingly the mmc console bombs out.

Is the printer installed on thsi particular computer? You might want to try to remove its drivers.
