  • Still getting half expected file size with 2 pass and new patch

    Hi guys,

Still getting a problem with 2-pass encoding.
File sizes are coming out at half what MSP predicts!?

Running the new update – I’m showing 7.20.1006.

Some very quick tests on a PAL DV file – 60-second length – just the file!

    Here are the file sizes:

    Constant 6000, quality 70, DD 192 - 45.1 MB
    Variable 6000, quality 70, mpg 192, 1pass – 43.1MB
    Variable 6000, quality 70, DD 192, 2pass – 20.6MB
    Variable 6000, quality 70, mpg 192, 2pass – 20.6MB
    Variable 6000, quality 70, DD 192, 1pass – 41.4MB

    Advance button not enabled
    Lower field first
    Smart render unchecked

Encoding times ~ 1 min 30 secs for 1pass and constant, around 3 min 15 sec for 2pass.
With two pass the file is scanned twice…

    Running W2kSP4
    P4 2.53
    1GB RAM
    G550
    MSI 6704 M/B
    DX8.1

Of course, now I’ve got the new patch on there is no logfile to send on for analysis!

    Any help is appreciated.

    Best wishes,

    Nick.

You are aware that MSPro 7 requires DirectX 9, right?

    Minimum Requirements

    Microsoft®, Windows® 98SE, ME, 2000, XP
    Intel® Pentium® III compatible system (500Mhz CPU)
    Microsoft® DirectX® 9 required
128MB RAM (256 or higher recommended)
300MB of available hard disk space (4Gb recommended)
    CD or DVD-ROM drive
    My recommendation would be for you to;

    1. Un-install MSPro 7 and reboot. When it comes back up delete all MSPro7 folders in;

    C:/Program Files/Ulead Systems/....

    and

    C:/Documents and Settings/(your name)/Application data/Ulead Systems/....

    2. Update to Dx9.0c (latest build) and reboot again.

The Microsoft DirectX® End-User Runtime installs a number of runtime libraries from the legacy DirectX SDK for some games that use D3DX9, D3DX10, D3DX11, XAudio 2.7, XInput 1.3, XACT, and/or Managed DirectX 1.1. Note that this package does not modify the DirectX Runtime installed on your Windows OS in any way.

    3. NOW reinstall MSPro7 off the CD and apply the 7.20.0006 patch only

Now re-install any plugins that you use (Stefan Burgers transitions, SpiceMaster, Boris. a frameserver, my PIP package etc. etc.)

      Hi Doc...

I know that DX9 is recommended, but if I upgrade to DX9, I can't export any DV to my ADVC100!!! It appears to be a known problem with some of them... I know Brian has an ADVC100 and uses it with DX9 witn no problem.

Even with DX8.1 exporting is a bit hit and miss.

I did a few weeks ago, test out XP (SP2 fixes the problem) and with the beta patch got a similar "half file size".

What I'll do tomorrow is create a backup image (so I can restore my PC to DX8.1) and then install DX9.

I'll have a play now with your uninstall notes and see if that helps.

      I'll report back.

      Best wishes,

      Nick.

Hmm....fog clearing.....old thread coming to the fore....

Open up Media Player and browse to the Tools/Options/Performance/Advanced menu.

Is the Digital Video slider all the way to LARGE or is it in an intermediate position?

If it's in an intermediate position move it to LARGE then OK, Apply, OK your way out. Now try again.

          Hi Doc

          Thanks for the reply.

By the time I got your message it was too late!

I uninstalled as per your notes... upgraded to DX9, installed MSP7 and the new update.

Launching Video Editor caused an error. It seemed to stall around the audio filters.

Launching Video Capture, I got a cannot see preview graph (or words to that effect).

Tried to uninstall/reinstall a couple of times and couldn't get Veditor to launch.

One strange thing - I uninstalled all Ulead products, but couldn't uninstall Workshop 1.3! Went to add remove programs and the "change/remove" button wouldn't work - a conflict?

So I'm now posting from a fresh install of XP Home SP2 - and all appears to be well.

I'll probably run with XP for a few weeks, but to me W2k feels more solid, so I may have a further play with that down the line.

As ever, thanks for your help.

If anything happens in the near future, I'll resurrect this thread!

          EDIT
          **********************

Just finished reloading my PC - fired up Veditor and got the error message again!

It fails on initialising audio filters...

I've grabbed the notepad file that details the problem, but it (obviously) means nothing to me.

I can send it on if needed.

I'm off to uninstall etc again!

              Hi Doc,

Just done some more very quick tests...

              Uninstalled as per your instructions.

Original install from d/l version... opens fine.

Added new patch (2_1)... Veditor fails to open.

              Uninstalled again.

Original install plus original patch... Veditor fails to open.

              Uninstall again.

Original install plus original patch plus your beta patch... Veditor opens.

Somethings fishy... always fails on "audio filters".

              Best, again,

              Nick.

OK... so now I'm running with the first 7.2 patch and Doc's beta patch (the only way I can get to Veditor)

Doc, I thought you might be onto something with your post about Media Pleyer.

I use mplayer 6.4 for my avi, wav and mp3 files and mp9 for streaming.

Thought this might be part of the problem...

However, having reset all media files to mp9,
I created six 2-pass files and five of the six were half the expected file size.

With hindsight, I probably didn't tick the 2-pass box on the one that turned out OK!

I've just redone the dvp (it's only one file) to see if that could've become corrupt in some way, but again the file size of the mpeg created is still half what MSP predicts.

All this is on a fresh install of XP Home SP2/DX9c.

Please let me know if I'm missing anything out.

                Regards,

                Nick.
