People here will probably suggest one of the four options.

Citrix - quite expensive needs dedicated server. Works over a phoneline. And is like a dumb terminal window where all the processing is done by the server. Probably best solution if need security and more than a few users. Depends what she needs to do on the server?

Symantec PC anywhere. Will allow her access to her pc at work if set up correctly.

Maybe realVNC - not sure how it works. But it's free. Not sure bout security.

Fourth is the built in thing in XP called remote assistance. I have never tried it though.

Havent had much experience to be honest.

Isn't there a remote login feature built into WinXP? I've never used it though, so I can't say anything about it.

Secure, cost-effective remote access and support for your computer, from your desktop or mobile device. VNC® Connect enables cloud or direct connectivity.

VNC is lightweight, but the headache is for dialup access you'll need RAS installed to allow connection on the XP PC. I'll look around for ya a little more there....and turn on ICQ dammit

        setup RAS on the PC

Does her work have a static IP address, if not you need a service like www.dyndns.org offers.

Knowing a little bit about how the office is set up from our previous conversations, try this

grab me on ICQ if you need

If you decide to try Symantec's PC anywhere realize that it is going to be slow especially if you are going to have both sides on dial-up. Just transferring files works better than trying to actually move windows around on the remote computer.

The service is easier to use if the monitor(s) are larger (more pixels) where you are than where you are trying to visit.

I've been using tightvnc (.com) lately with great success in Win2k3 server with various clients. You can use the standalone viewer, and there's a java viewer too. I get the odd problem where I need to force a screen refresh but that's all. There are various compression options.

One tip is you need to install it as a service to be able to connect while the server is locked or logged out.

One thing: if the server is behind a firewall, you will have to forward the ports used by the software to her server.
The client would then have to connect with the firewall...

I always use TightVNC myself, it (supposedly) is more secure than normal VNC, and it works quite well. Though I use it between WinXP (client side) and Linux (server side), but it does work on WinXP as a server as well.

One time I was even board and tried the window in window in window... I think I crashed it if I recall....

To explain, I had VNC Server running on my linux box, then the client running on my desktop, then I opened up the client on the server box and the server on the other one... so it should have showed an infinity of windows.... well, I'm thinking it crashed, maybe I should try it again

guys, read up, needs to access the server, not run programs on it.

*hint: if i remember correctly, users are really not ment to play with the server itself

I guess it's some sort of VPN (Virtual Private Network) that she needs then? Don't know much about that sort of thing...

I read that as someone needs access to the server (not explicitly files on the server, but I guess you are probably right) and that he needs to tell his wife how to do it whilst he is on the phone to her.

                          Perhaps he should VPN instead?

                              That is stupid.
I suppose for an extra cost they have a plan that allows it.
Otherwise businesses would drop them like a hot potato because of employees not being able to remote in.
