I'm thinking about ordering this; does anyone know if the pioneer optical drives are any good? If not, what other drives/brands would be good?

    I have a Pioneer 108 .... its a pretty good drive.

My particular one doesn't like RICOHJPNR02 disks, and can only burn them well at 6 speed. Other Pioneer 108 drives have varing levels of success with this media, so if you use a lot of RICOHJPN02 disks, it might be a good idea to choose a different drive. Otherwise it is a very good buy.

Other good drives include the NEC 3500 and the benq 1620.

DVD-burner Drives I wouldn't recommend include Liteon, BTC and Plextor.

I'd go for the NEC instead. It's available at that site. Anandtech just did a big comparison: http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.aspx?i=2260
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

Pioneer DVD drives are very high quality and according to test results produce superb discs (destructive tests, not the crap that Anandtech et al do). Kind of like Plextor used to do really.
