Ok, I am being told of a X-mas bonus of at least 1k$ USD. I need suggestions for a 3+Ghz rig with a gig of ram on a stable board that will be happy with the latest vid cards out there that fits this budget. AMD or INTEL cpu.

90nm (Winchester) core AMD64 of some sort for starters, I'd suggest.

I agree with GNEP. The A64's are one fast rig & have the edge of late. Intels gonna be in the dumpers until they come out with their dual-core dies, and even then AMD will likely have been there first.

I thought the 90 nm cores weren't hitting retail unitl next year? At least the ones with SSE3 (which is what I'm aiming for).

BTW, this belongs in General Hardware/Software ...

Nope, the Winchester cores are around (just) on socket 939 and are being fairly well received AFAIK.

If I was in the market right now, I'd get a socket 939 A64 as well.

ASUS, MSI, Abit, etc are all good, I along with the others also recommend some sort of A64. For a video card go with the 6800GT or a 6600GT (when the AGP part comes out), but depends on the budget.

A big thing to consider would also be PCI-E.

Yup - possibly it's worth waiting for the A64 PCIe mobos to be around in force (they're imminent - nForce4, ATI, VIA, for most of the main manufacturers) and then see which is getting favourable feedback.

Careful. From what I've been able to figure out, ECS is PCChips. And ECS has been making some good boards.

Nope. Pcchips is not ECS. Their business relationship is confusing because they have the same owner -but he keeps them separate.
