  • Changing codecs?

    I see many different codecs mentioned in posts and sights. I was wondering if these codecs are stand alone programs or if they can be insterted somehow into the PC-VCR program.

    I've searched under changing codecs, and other phrases, but I'm afaid I'm I'm lost again.

    For example, what would be a high quality codec for 1,2,3; ex. capture, convert using TMPGEnc to MPEG-1, then burn VCD w/Adaptec?, and how would I install the codec to use it with the RR-g?

    I'd prefer to capture at 352x240 if I can get good quality, but I'm freeing up disk space furiously to make room for some 704x480 recording/testing.

    PC-VCR is locked into using only MJPeg and RGB.

    To use the alternative codecs you need to use another capture utility. The one most of us have found most effective is AVI_IO, a shareware proggie that costs a very reasonable $25 USD.

    http://www.nct.ch/multimedia/avi_io/index.html

    You can also use VirtualDUB, which is free, but it uses more system resources and isn't as nimble.

    Once you have that you'll need Flying Dutchman's YUY2 patch for the ver. 1.52 video tools. This enables the ability to capture YUY2, an uncompressed format.

    FD's YUY2 patch was on the download page at Desktop Video Worlds page, but that page is down for now. If you're interested mail me and I'll send it to you.

    Once AVI_IO is set to use YUY2 you then can compress it during the capture to an alternative codec like HuffYUV (halves the size of YUY2 files and makes GREAT looking MPEG's) or PICVideo MJPeg (higher quality than Matrox's codec. Use quality = 20).

    HuffYUV 2.1.1 is the version you want and can be had here;

    PICVideo MJPeg is a commercial product, but its freely licensed. Just register it and they will send you the reg codes for free. Get PICVideo MJPeg here;

      Thanks again Dr.Mordrid,

      Just a few more questions, promise. When you said, "Once you have that you'll need Flying Dutchman's YUY2 patch", you were refering to both AVI_IO and Virtual Dub, right?

      What is the difference in file size between
      Matrox MJPeg and YUY2 w/out HuffyYUV, estimate? Just curious.

      What is "Use Quality"?

      I didn't understand what PicVideo is an alternative to? Is it a program like AVI_IO or a plug-in like YUY2? sorry!

      If I ask you a question 3 times, do you have to answer? I sure hope you're on the payroll Dr.
