Can you set this up as a application server without having to use active directory?

This is where the lack of training my present job is going to bite me sadly.

Yes, server 2003 can be a stand alone server without an active directory infrastructure (it uses the local SAM for authentication). It can also be a member server in an AD or NT4 domain (uses the local SAM or the domain for authentication), or as a domain controller in an AD domain (uses only the domain for authentication).

Note that you can't have a 2003 server as a BDC in an NT4 domain.

    Edited for clarity.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. Bastard coated bastards with bastard filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive, bubble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine. -- Dr. Perry Cox
