I've heard about the mouse pad before. Cool idea! I can't wait for it to take off.
Perhaps you will be able to install some sort of transducer under the desk that will charge the mouse/pda etc (or give you testicular cancer!)

It isn't that much different, and that's why it won't work if mounted under the desk - the field strength weakens with the distance squared, IIRC. I don't think it has any future: You have to install stuff in the device you want to charge, you can only charge very gently (thus slowly), and bundling a mousepad with a mouse has never worked (see Logi's early force feedback mouse).
