  • Dual Lyer DVD-Writers..... Go or No Go

Now that Dual Lyer DVD-Writers have widely hit the market. What is the general opinion about them ?

At the moment I have 2 Pioneer DVD Writers DVD 105 and DVR 106. Is it worth also having a Dual Lyer DVD-Writer or shall I wait untill a better performance is achieved ? In other words, how good are they ?

Media is hard enough to get here to prohibit testing them. if they work, they would be nice for videos.

Plextor PX716 has 4x dual layer burn. Supposed to be available in November. IT looks like its been delayed a coupel weeks from its original october 15ish date.

There is a wide choice of the hardware and media here.

Media is still expenceive, but the price of the HW is almost that of a single layer.

I just wondered what the general feeling is about them ?

If I was buying my first dvd burner I would defintely get a dual layer.

But since I already have a single layer drive, I will be waiting until the dual media layer comes down to a reasobale price.

eg...not worth upgrading from a single layer dvd drive.

            Marshmallowman,

I'll take your advice. This is also what I have been thinking but I needed a little "push".

If you need a DVD writer, you'll find the price about the same (or cheaper) to buy dual layer; but it's not worth upgrading to.

I've got a Pioneer too, but don't plan on buying another DVD drive until DVD-R9 is offered - which supposedly is in the works.

I just googled DVD-R9, and got a bunch of foreign business. What's the skinny on it?

Dual layer recordable DVDs, of the - rather than + variant. It was demonstrated about the same time as +DL; but it's launch date (if you can really have a launch date for stuff like this) is still unknown.

This Sony burner http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...131-239&DEPA=1 says that it supports DVD+R9.... So is there a DVD+R9 and DVD-R9? Isn't this what pissed off a lot of early DVD burner owners? I'm looking into getting a DVD burner now, since my DVD rom is no longer useful for playing DVDs... Figured that I might as well get a burner. I'm still thinking that I'll wait until that Plextor 716A is out...

Debbie, do yourself a favour and wait for the Pioneer A09 which will support -R DL as opposed to +R DL, that's what I'm going to do.

It will be released by year end or early next year.

                        Regards,

                          Elie,

I'm in no rush. As I said earlyer, I have 2 Pioneer burners the A05 and the A06 and also a Pioneer DVD reader and I am very happy with the lot.

I think dual layer hardware and media is trelativly new for home use, so I will leave a few months to pass and see what Pioneer have to offer.

initial test results of that drive over at cdfreaks.com have lead to disappointment!

No surprises there. It's a shame, because Plextor still have some good people, they just don't seem to be in the right places.
