  • Damn the curse strikes again

Since I was going to put a Terratec souncard in one machine I decided to do a clean XP install to remove clunge build up.

Put the card in boot from CD blue screen.
For some reason XP card see the hard disk.

Okay loaded bios defaults and XP can now see the hard drive. Everything installs boot s into winblows.

Install Nortons firewall machine reboots half way through. Bugger I also noticed that the gigabit lan card hadn't installed. I'd have thought service pack 2 XP would know about this.

Install network card. Try Nortons doesn't want to know.

System restore after deleting a few bits of norton. Re-install network card. Nortons goes on. Do live update machine reboots half way through.

Go into bios and relax the memory timings.

Run life update freezes machine constantly does high low bleeps. Asus book doesn't have the codes useful. Reboot and check all fans working yup.

Check voltages seem okay reboot load asus increase mem voltage reboot.

Install Terrac card everything seems happy install video card seems happy.

Tune the TV channels everything okay. Put another CD in machine reboots.

Adjust cpu voltage Asus probe said it was getting a little low.

    Doing something else reboots.

Turn of vpu recover shouldn't make any differance.

Decided to do a quick run with memtest and found no errors in half n hour. I'll run it again overnight.

The only good news is that soundcard sounds tons better music wise than the old Audigy plus I haven't got a horrible breakout box taking space.

The machine had been working 24hrs a day for the last couple of months as well.

      Time to retire I think.

The 12v line is hovering between 11.7v and 11.8v the 3.3 line around 3.2v.

CPU temp 36C which isn't bad.

Do you think this voltage difference is to blame?
Can you remove any hardware, or won't it help the voltage?

I suspect voltage considering how much juice my other machine needs to get it too work properly.

However the rig isn't running a 9800 pro and the P4 is a 2.66gig and 9200SE AIW. They shouldn't be watt crushers really. Four 80mm fans two hard drives one DVD drive one zip one Universe 7.1 soundcard. Antec 480 watts should be fine.

I agree with Paddy, you are freakin' cursed! I'd say that most people just don't know what they're doing, when they have problems like this, but it looks like you covered all the bases. You're just cursed.

But if you ever want to feel better... head over to the nvnews.net forums, the people there are either idiots, or even more cursed than you. It's pretty bad when one version of the nvidia drivers works great on one person's machine, but on another's it totally messes everything up.

meh, motherboard voltage testers are NEVER to be really trusted .... use a multimeter if you really want to know what the real voltage is to any degree of accuracy.

I agree I don't trust them however they give a rougth idea if theres any major swings.

The computer has now been running without rebooting for 24hrs.

I used it too play a Led Zep DVD and WinDVD had a huge stutter when ever the Weather station uploaded data to my website.

I turned off the autoplay feature too see if thats the problem.

Well I've swapped out the power supply and noticed the ampage for the 12v plus line was 18 amps max. Well four fans are taking 6 amps already so it doesn't leave much for the P4, Hard drives and DVd drive.
Might explain why it bombed on installing software.
