  • "Unmounting" partition in winXP?

Here's the problem: due to crc errors (badblocks probably...) on first partition I wasn't able to use windows update on this system...which run rather good (firewall & antivirus onboard...) until now, however for some reason the error with XP & my "DSL" modem started to appear - bluescreens galore (I consider myself very lucky to post this). So I'm really desperate to upgrade to at least SP1 (in which problem was solved). However WU uses the first drive available, not a system drive . Since I don't see any other solution...is there a way to "unmount" somehow a partition in XP? I don't want to delete it...still many, many data are possible to recover...

It failed to repair the drive.
Dunno if you can dismount the drive to be honest.

You can disable it in storage management.

Just make sure, page file (My Computer->Properties) is not there and you're not booting of said partition.

Can't you make the partition hidden with like partition magic or something ?

Utwig, how exactly? I've looked there earlier but I can't see any options for this...

                    remove?

...be sure and put the focus on the volume you want to unmount first!

                      (crappy translations of help files)

So...theoretically it worked...I selected drive/partition/volume...issued the command...cmd reported everything ok...but nothing happened really

But I have completely new idea: I will assign healthy partition to the catalog to which WU downloads files in first partition - I think it should work...

(I hope you understand this - you might have Polish Windows. Slovenian Windows are a linguistic disaster. When I'm confronted by someone with Slovenian Windows, I have to literally translate meaningless idioms back to English.)

                        My Computer->Manage

                        Disk Management

Right-click on partition->Change drive letter and path

                        Remove drive letter

                        OK

Won't windows reassign it a drive letter anyway?

why not simply boot XP into safe mode with console and use chkdsk c: /R /X and let it get repaired in first place ?
