After reading that is there anyone else around here that thinks a College education is way over rated these days? I just started going to college just to get the stupid ****ing peice of paper since it seems that any job that pays better then my current one require it.

Why is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?

I hope that makes your job more secure than his!

I don't think that degrees are overrated. In fact i think they are becoming undervalued! You can get degrees in surfing for f*cks sake!

When my dad left uni and got a job, they wanted a degree. They didn't care what it was in, or what he got, they just wanted a degree. I guess it shows that you have the maturity and commitment to go through uni. Nowdays people see it as the easy way out, finances permitting.

Its not so much as them becoming overrated, but overvalued in the United States. I'm big fan of someone having experance vs. a paper degree saying they know something.

My Sister has a 2 yr degree for her job in HR and has nearly 11 years experance. She works with someone that has a 4 yr degree with 3-4 yrs experance and that same person makes nearly 7K more a year then she does in the same job, just because of her education.

There are other examples I can give like putting college grads on an assembly line to supervise workers that have years more experance then they do and telling them how to do their job.

*g* hey, I'm doing exactly that as a part time job beside my studies. fun, even without a degree (yet). but I guess my prior education has some advantages...

I can remember back when radiology techs weren't required to have degrees. I taught and did the board preps in such a program and they turned out top-notch techs for ages. Why? They didn't waste a lot of time on classes not pertinent to the situation.

When the change to degree programs came of course most of the newbies thought they were so much better than the old timers....right up until a situation arose that required something other than their cook-book training, which is when they fell flat on their arses

Still; most of the "old" techs ended up getting their degrees instead of being satisfied with being grandfathered in. Those who did are still more valued than those with 95% book-leaning.

Fortunately a lot of schools have learned to do it both ways....

our education system needs a rehaul. we need to teach more skills in school than we currently do - 95+% book education will give you a smart person who doesn't know how to change his/her own oil or tires.

In the UK, every two-bit college now calls itself a university and issues degrees that are not worthe the paper they are printed on. Tony Blair boasts that 1/3 the school leavers now become uni students. Once more quantity seems more important than quality. I was asked to adjuciate on a dissertation on my specialist subject, by a reasonably reputable uni, a few years back. Not only was there hardly a sentence that was orthographically or grammatically correct (which is perhaps not over-important, provided that the sense was clear - which it wasn't), but the quality of the work was, IMHO, 3rd year BSc and not 5th year MEng. I discussed this at length witth the prof and a fellow adjudicator and we all agreed the quality was not good, but it was up to the required standard for a non-honours degree. Having also employed newly qualified graduates in a former life, I was invariably disappointed at what they knew.

The problem is just like everything else in our screwed up society.. you need money to make money. In this case you need a rich daddy to buy you 4 years of college plus graduate/professional school. This article is right. Our society is becoming extremely unbalanced at an extremely rapid rate of speed. People who have values other than greed or extreme predation need a professional degree or they WILL be serfs, plain and simple. Either you are a doctor or lawyer and make $300,000/year or you are a ditch digger/WalMart checker and make $10,000/year with no benefits (i.e. when you and your children get sick, they can ****ing die for all anyone cares.. **** you, you poor nothing.)

Not only this, but the megacorps and economies of scale make it almost impossible to start or maintain one's own entrepreneurial enterprise, especially in retail.

Our greedy, myopic, traitorous "leaders" who are supposed to "represent" us will do nothing but line their pockets with megacorp bribes until this problem rears up and bites them in the ass... maybe like this:

And here is what really pisses me off..

Yet his kids -- his son is 26 and his twin daughters are 21 -- still live at home because they can't afford places of their own. None of them went to college, although his daughters had 3.8 grade-point averages in high school and his son aced the SATs. They're saving to go back to school -- eventually. In the meantime, they work. His son lays carpet and his daughters stock shelves in a warehouse.
This is really typical.. quality people like this are just thrown away by this society, while some crackhead retard ****wad who, by the grace of God is 7 feet tall, is given $10,000,000 a year for playing basketball. Oh, and our trash TV shows expect us to all sympathise with and worship the aforementioned human turd!!!

Greedy corporations MUST be stopped. They are THE enemy. And they OWN "your" government!
