  • New toy....

    I'm sure most of you know what a propane torch is like....a small tank of gas with a 1-2 cm nozzle for light soldering, small brazing jobs, removing paint etc.

    Well....I came to the conclusion that I needed something slightly larger, so I came upon this rig (pardon it being on a very messy table saw);

    Instead of the usual 1 lb (.45 kg) gas cylinder this one holds a bit more: 20 lbs (~9 kg). The torch assembly is about 25" long (63.5 cm) and the nozzle can is about 3" (7.6 cm) in diameter and 5" (12.7 cm) long.

    This is an image of it on low flame (the valve just cracked and the torch lit);

    and this is an image of it on high flame (valve wide & blast lever fully depressed). The image was taken at a rather steep angle so there is some degree of foreshortening of the flames image, but it's about 8' long (2.5 meters) and about 6" (~15 cm) at its maximum diameter;

    Flame temp: 3600 F (1990 C )

    Power: 500,000-600,000 BTU

    Just right for starting charcoal

    Now....how many of you know what this little jewels primary uses are?

        More like vaporizing wood splinters

        Nope...not for warming tractors either.

        Have no idea how long a 20 lb cylinder will burn. I've run it for about a minute so far....just enough to test it and take pictures.

        Keep guessing guys....

                        I used to work for a rental center, where we rented those out as ice melters in the winter, to clear sidewalks/driveways...in the summer as weed incinerators, to clear areas for lanscape work.

                              I'm with Kruzin,
                              I've made something like it, not as nice as yours Dr. but for the reason Kruzin mentions. Also I'd recommend getting a little cheapy trolley for the propane tank. It gets heavy logging that thing around.
