  • Sid Meier's Pirates! Remake in the works!

I loved this game when it came out back in 1987

Why is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?

    ARR !

I loved this game and the review sounds very positive about the remake keeping the original spirit.
The best part about this, though, is that everything is completely randomized each time you restart the game. Most gamers will probably complete their first pirate career in a few days and then come back, again trying to best their last score or their last career -- or maybe just see how quickly they can take down a British 50 gun man-o'-war with a one gun sloop. Just like the original, the updated version of Sid Meier's Pirates! feels like it has that insanely addictive quality that secured the original a coveted permanent place on my hard drive for many yarrrs! -- I mean, years. It is, of course, impossible to render any final judgment on a prerelease version of the game, especially one with such a crucial bug in it. Once that's cleared up, though, and the game reaches its final, polished state and is released on November 16th, I'd wager a pile o' doubloons that a whole new generation of gamers will once again learn the joys of screaming, "Keelhaul the scurvy sons o' sea wenches!" as they ravage the Spanish Main.

Woohoo the gameplay of the orignal version was absolutely great. I recently tried "Port Royale" sort of pirates! but a more trading oriented focus, but it couldn't keep me interested.

I like the screen shot that shows the 2 guys battling, and the hp indicators are labeled "pirate" and "bad guy".
When I was growing up, history taught that pirates WHERE the bad guys. The terrorists of their century. Now, they are the heros?

Yeah, funny how that works, Kruzin. Kind of the same thing with Billy the Kid, and other Old West 'heroes'.

I seem to recall reading somewhat recently that there was an open source project to recreate Pirates as well. Good stuff. Played it on the ol' Amiga. Damn that had some good sound.

Isn't there an OSS clone of this game somewhere?

Ah yes, here it is: http://home.gna.org/freebooters/

I've not played this or the original, so can't comment on it.

Yeah, that's what the name of it was. I knew I had seen something about it on www.happypenguin.org.
