  • looks like cat 4.9's are going to be over 40Mb & need .NET framework!

WE HAVE JUST LEARNED that ATI drivers are going to be much bigger that we expected and will put even more pressure on dial up users.
We wrote about this driver here, and gave you some general facts about it.

But then weren't aware that this driver is going to be significantly bigger then any previous one. Even regular 4.8 catalyst are 26MB. Just a few revisions earlier, even 20MB was too big for drivers.

The ACE driver is almost 40MB, so a hefty download. And there is one other thing that you will have to download in order to make this driver work. You need .NET framework, an additional 23MB to prior driver download. So at least for the first use this driver was almost 65 MB download. Yes we have it and will let you know what we think of it in action.

One benefit of Microsoft’s .NET framework is that it will allow you to easily create plug-in extensions, if you can. The other thing is that Longhorn is based on the .NET framework. Do you think that we should start caring now about an OS that may come two years from now if we are lucky? ATI sure thinks we should.

Holy crap! The nVidia drivers are all around 12mb and the Matrox ones are all 8-9mb. Well, of course with the Matrox ones you also need .NET, so would that make nVidia's cards the largest, but their drivers the smallest? (well, out of the big names anyhow, not sure about all the Xabre and S3, etc.

Well, it seems that Matrox has made a wise decision to move .NET Framework based drivers so much earlier. Now they have had a plenty of time to practise making perfect/stable drivers also for Longhorn. Just waiting for newer hardware now...

I believe there is something going on at Matrox now.
If you look at here, Matrox sales representative says that they intend to release some PCI Express cards at the end of Q4 (at earliest).

Look here and you will see they are considering OpenGL 2.0 for their next generation chip:

Well, considering that the linux Kernel (version 2.6.8.1) was 40mb for the source code....

So yup, must be windows without all the 'fluff'

Of course, that's with all the drivers for every (non-proprietary) hard drive controller, video card, sound card, firewire, USB(1 and 2), network card, all chipsets, RAID, a dozen file systems, etc. etc.

                          But you knew that

Yup, and raw source code. Though it's tar.gz'd. How big is the source tree extracted though? Maybe the same size as the ATI drivers + .Net framework?

Well as long as you have a broadband connection it's nothing to worry about.

The internatonal set is around 20MB, so it's not much smaller than ATi sets as the international version is the one you get.
