  • Older Video Card Ranking?

I'm currently upgrading my sister-in-law's family computer. So far I've replaced their mobo w/ PII 400MHz cpu & 64mb ram with an Abit BE6 mobo w/ P3 850MHz cpu & 256mb ram that I already had from my kid's old computer.

Now I want to replace their Viper 550 (16mb) video card! I'm trying to do this with the least amount of money (so far I've spent $0 ). I want to spend no more than $50 on a new card that would match well with a P3 850. What do you all suggest?

I'm a bit confused with all the older cards. Can anyone rank the following cards in order of performance?
    GF 5200
    GF 5500
    GF 5600
    GF 5700
    GF3 Ti 200
    GF3 Ti 500
    GF4 Ti 4200
    GF4 Ti 4600
    GF MX 440
    GF MX 440-8X
    GF MX 4000
    ATI 9000
    ATI 9200
    ATI 9600

My kid currently is running with a GF3 Ti 200 in his XP 2700+ system. I'm considering possibly upgrading his video card and putting the GF3 T200 in the In-Law's. They are not power users, but have 2 kids (14 and 12) that would like to play some games (like Madden Football).

Great links! They really helped a lot. That 80 card review was pretty good, except they were tested on a pretty powerful cpu (3.2GHz if I remember correctly), so maybe not completely scaleable down to a 850MHz P3. The Tom's Hardware link had an older article that actually used 2 different cpu for testing... an Athlon 1000 and an XP 2700+ ... both of which are pretty darn close to what I am dealing with now.

Anyway, based on all the info, I decided to upgrade my kid's GF3 Ti200 with a GF4 Ti4600 to go into his XP 2700+ system. Then I will take his Ti200 and put it in the "In-Laws'" system which is running the P3 850. They should see a huge difference from the Viper 550 they had in there.

On Ebay, I just bid -- and won -- an Xtasy GF4 Ti4600 for $74.50 usd (plus $8 shipping)! Cheapest I could find for a new one was $129 through Pricewatch.com. Two computers get a pretty good graphics upgrade for a total of $82.50.
