  • MainConcept H.264 encoder.....

Know those MPEG-4 capable DVD players that have come out recently?

Here's a high quality encoder for those players that support H.264 AVC (MPEG-4 Part 10. AVC = Advanced Video Coding), which should work on most all of 'em....

You don't mean stand-alone players, do you?

I hadn't heard of one that plays h264 yet. Many play SP and ASP of Mpeg4.

H264 is the next generation set for hd-dvd along with wmv9.

Yes, I mean standalone tabletop decks. There will be support for H.264 in SD players as well as the coming HD players.

For those that haven't heard the latest DVD Forum specification requires all HD-DVD compatible video players to support MPEG-2, MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding (AVC—H.264) and Windows Media Video 9 codec (VC-9) formats.

Sure, the next gen will have it. But, are you saying there are players I can buy right now that have h264 support? I'd love to get one if so.

I witnessed such a player at NAB 2004 at the MS booth playing a hi-def wmv format DVD. Bitrate was 8000kpbs constant (they were still working on read out issues for VBR) and the quality was excellent especially considering the 1080i format and DVD-like bitrate. The rep told me then (late April) it would be about 6 months before we'd see the consumer players. Perhaps they're ahead of schedule.

Yes, the players will be here soon. The big question is when we'll be seeing the wmv and mpeg-4 capable authoring apps.

Doc, I just noticed you use one of those
low-cost Asrock boards. Are they usable, or do you regret the buy?
Resistance is futile - Microborg will assimilate you.
