  • Fraunhofer Strikes Back! True 3D sound?

Das people at the Fraunhofer Institute are pimping a new audio technology. Traditional surround technology will only give true spacial recoginition in a small area called "the sweet spot". Fraunhofer's new tech is said to turn the entire theater, or home theater, into one big sweet spot. Meaning, no mater where you sit within the sound field, you'll hear the sound track in true 3D space.

    Better description in the article:

they use an array of small speakers, sometimes as many as 300 or 400
that is an awfull lot of speakers though .. not something you will likely ever see at home

It's much like the Pioneer One speaker (which uses an array of speakers in a single panel to produce full 7.1 sound)

Given that 5.1 hasn't come close to reaching a 50% market saturation I think we shouldn't be in too much of a hurry to adopt new multi-channel "standards"
