  • Cool & Quiet

    I just got an Asus A8V, A64 3500+, and Mushkin PC3200.

There is this new feature on the A64 that downclocks your CPU and voltage(i guess like the Pentium-M's) when you aren't doing much. It's pretty slick. Check out how low the speed and voltage dropped and the temp:

cool... however, what's the vcore it ran at, when the screenshot was taken? both the cool&quiet app and pc probe display different voltages.

Good question, Asus Probe never drops below 1.344. Let's see what Sandra says...

Sandra also says 1.34. So I am not sure why it is so far off.

          How about MBM?
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

MBM reports my 3200+ goes down to 1.24v and CPU-Z reports that it goes down to 1.264v. Of course, it also drops the multiplier down to 4x and runs at 800Mhz.

            pretty wicked cool.

it's not really a "new" feature - its been on all the Athlon64's. It's just that a majority of the first run motherboards chose not to implement it to start out with. My Shuttle SN85G4 cube got a bios flash that added support for it.

And "not doing much" means quite a bit for an A64. I gather they can happily play DVDs and big DivXs without needing to turn on the CPU fans.

                Cool!
I'm in the process of getting a Athlon64 system at home myself. Going for a ASUS K8N-E with nForce 250Gb chipset...

Looking forward to test Cool & Quiet!

It's not like the Pentium M's so much as it's like the PowerNow technology that AMD has had for a long time. It's really cool.

it can do quite a lot at "idle" speeds. mine would acctually run EQ with everything maxed and at 1280x1024 without putting the processor to full speed. it all depends on the program - if it is designed to use all available resources and run as fast as possible, it will go to full speed... if it is designed to run only up to a certain speed and idle when it is not doing anything, it may or may not even have to run at full clock speed.

That kicks ass, I really really want an A64 system.... though not until after I get a nVidia 6800 GT... Sad that the CPU would be running cooler than my hard drives... I think there is something wrong with that..

Athlon 64 runs cooler than my P4 1.8A

                        That's just totally awesome!

hmm... why can't nvidia launch their PCI Express chip already???

i will get one once PCI Express hits the market.... and doesn't cost an arm and a leg

hehe, ok, anyways, i think its a good idea to block out the SN, dave

the SN? I don't see any SN in that...
