  • Linux drivers out... now where is that elusive 6800?

For those interested, the linux drivers that support nVidia's 6800 family of cards is now out on their website, but where are the freaking cards??

I'm wanting to get the Leadtek 6800 GT, but haven't been able to find a shop anywhere for them...

Bit different from ATI(or matrox for that matter) eh, drivers available before you need them.

I am defintely going to start putting a few dollars away for a 6800 gt in the future.

Yep they are almost unfindable or very exspensive if you find one. It seems NVidia has the best drivers for Linux atm. I asked some friends yesterday about there ATI linux drivers experiences and they all advised to stay away from ATI for linux.
      Main: Dual Xeon LV2.4Ghz@3.1Ghz | 3X21" | NVidia 6800 | 2Gb DDR | SCSI
      Second: Dual PIII 1GHz | 21" Monitor | G200MMS + Quadro 2 Pro | 512MB ECC SDRAM | SCSI
      Third: Apple G4 450Mhz | 21" Monitor | Radeon 8500 | 1,5Gb SDRAM | SCSI

Yup, which is THE reason (only reason) I'll buy nVidia over ATI. I'm looking to move away from Windows (due to Longhorn's DRM crap and other reasons) and go all the way with linux. And need some good drivers for the video card, and nVidia, while closed source, is doing a good job at supporting them. They even have a killer interface for them now

Best deal, if you're willing to wait:

CompUSA has 30% off all PNY videocards this week. The Geforce 6800GT is listed as "coming soon" at $399.

You can do a prepay at 30% off that price, or $279. You don't know when it will actually come in, but it is a great deal if you're willing to wait...

That's not a bad deal at all, but the question is, how much of a difference is the PNY over the Leadtek one? The Leadtek one has a sweet fan system on it, which, depending on what site you visit, has either 28-30db noise on the fan...

I'm not sure about the fan.

When you consider the price difference, that goes a long way towards a new cooling system...

Water cooling for me, I already have an overkill radiator for my cpu water block, I just need to find a 6800 compatible water block and I'll be a happy little camper.

I heard MS was going to drop DRM or at least rethink it since they weren't getting any support from developers for it.

yeah, but that's only one reason upon many that I don't think I'll go for Longhorn. Actually, from everything I've been reading, most of the things that would make it worth anything have been cancelled (WinFS for one.)
