  • NV says NO HDTV on 6800's - Xortam!

    Ripped from HOCP:

    No NV HDTV:
Bit-Tech has a bit of scoopage on the GeForce 6800 HDTV support. Bit-Tech says they have confirmation from NVIDIA that there will be no HDTV support. Bit-Tech had a few choice words to say about NVIDIA’s misleading marketing.

The key lesson here is reading what is said, not reading what you expect: "6800 will support HDTV" is not the same statement as "6800 does support HDTV". To say that NVIDIA's Marketing is a little misleading here would be an understatement.

(Editor's Note: This is one of those times that we have to remember that NVIDIA does not sell video cards. Just because the feature is available in the technology, certainly does not mean we will see it in retail products. Sort of hard to hold NVIDIA's feet to the fire on this one as they have little or no control over actual feature sets offered. Anyone remember seeing many cards with Dual DVI outputs lately on either side of the fence?)
Ladies and gentlemen, take my advice, pull down your pants and slide on the ice.

Thanks ... I really wouldn't want to go with an NVIDIA product anyway (badly behaving company) and their fast cards aren't appropriate for an HTPC (power/heat/noise) though they have excellent VMR9 support.

this is really weird! they've put a lot of resources into the video aspect of their new cards/software... there's been loads of stuff going on with NVDVD3 betas on AVSForums, and by the looks of it, it was really catered towards HTPC enthusiasts...

        update:

        2) If you’re counting on HDTV working on your spanky new 6800, you’re out of luck: it has been confirmed this morning by Derek Perez of NVIDIA that the both the core and the existing reference board have no capacity to support an HDTV signal – though it is planned for the future NV43 & NV41 cores. If you are hoping a third party vendor is going to slap a discrete chip on there, you are likely to be disappointed because as far as we know no vendors are straying from the reference design.

appears that it'll be available on future shipping products

no vendors are straying from the reference design.
Hopefully that doesn't mean that all the vendors are going to put that huge ugly heatsink/fan combination on their cards. From what I saw of the pictures, not all of them even take two slots.... Is that going to be the only difference between the reference board and the final products?

acctually, last i saw NVidia had multiple variations of the cooler and multiple vendors have promised single slot 6800U versions. I know the 6800/GT varients do not require it.

One more reason to get an ATi card for those of us looking at HDTV capable cards for HTPC/CPC (Console PC) rigs.
