  • A little bit of NTFS magic.

Open a Command Prompt (Run: cmd), and type:

echo Some text here > test.txt:hidden.txt

Run dir, note that the new file (test.txt) is empty.

    Now type:

    notepad test.txt:hidden.txt

    Pretty funky, huh.

This is nothing new really, but I just found out about it today.

I think there was a demonstration virus that used NTFS streams, but none really in the wild. A year or so ago most virus scanners wouldn't scan stuff like this, Kaspersky released some statement about this being a potential security risk. Dunno if anything has changed, really.
