The cardiological department of the Zurich University Hospital committed an error which is difficult to imagine. A patient, in his 50s, underwent a heart transplant from a donor with a different blood group from his own. The unfortunate recipient was fighting against death yesterday evening.
The team which transplanted the wrong heart is composed of experienced surgeons. Marko Turino, head of the Heart Transplant Centre of Zurich (considered as one of the best in Europe), personally participated during the operation. More than 300 heart transplants have already been achieved in this department of the Cantonal Hospital over the last 15 years.
