  • Oh My GOD! WM8 is a two-pass encoder

Windows Media 8 encoder is a two-pass encoder!

which, also makes it slower... since it has to encode twice. And the only real use of it is in VBR mode anyway. Its CBR isn't good enough quality for my tastes. The compression scheme is ALOT better than divx (smaller filesize for similar quality).

Quality is something you'll have to decide for yourself, since it does things better than divx yet does worse in others. One thing I've noticed is that WM8 does bright scenes very well. Colors are very distiguished and macro blocking is really reduced (if your source is pure). However, in dark & slow motion scenes wm8 tends to be grainy. I'm still doing dvd rips with divx right now. But for vidcap conversions, I'm leaning towards wm8.

Also, there is a new beta2 of the encoder that came out recently. It seems slightly faster (very subtle though) and seems to reduce some motion artifacting. I haven't done enough testing on it yet to really confirm this.

I've been using/testing it since it came out last month. It's not the GOD of codecs, but it has some appeal to me over divx. It's also command line based right now, which will turn many people away. Definately an interesting codec.
