  • Gnome 2.6

Pretty sweet so far. Been playing with the debian packages.... May I dare say it's even MUCH faster than Gnome 2.4 was? It seems the speed difference is much like the difference between Gnome 2.2 - 2.4. If they keep going on these speed increases, it'll be like using a REAL operating system again. XP can sometimes be quite sluggish, even on my 3.06ghz computer. But so far Gnome since 2.x has been VERY fast. KDE has gotten faster too, though I still prefer gnome.

I'm not so sure about Nautilus though... I used to have the setup like it is with 2.6 on the Atari ST. Instead of opening up in the same window, any folder opens up into it's own window... so you'll have many windows if you're planning on going several directories deep.... Well, there are ways around it, just haven't figure them out yet... But it is FAST. Especially the thumbnailing feature. WAY Faster than windows' thumbnailing...

I can't wait to get it on my system. It'll have to wait though - I need to reorganize my HDs. I'll be fine with any Nautilus system as long as it doesn't crash randomly like it does on 2.4 for me.

I don't think I've ever had nautilus crash (at least I didn't until I upgraded to 2.6 and didn't have all the right .deb's installed...but that's what I get for installing it as it's going into experimental... It's working fine now though. Got to love that Debian packaging team that works on Gnome. The rock!
