VCD Question?

When making vcd, I can't capture MPEG1 but have downloaded TMPGEnc to make the transition. should the video be capture uncompressed first(big file)then coded thru TMPGEnc, or is there a space saving codec I can use prior to using TMPGEnc.
Is "microsoft video 1" MPEG1
I am relatively new at video editing but do find this forum very informative.

Nice to see a fellow Winnipeger. Anyway regarding your question, for best quality its best to go with a uncompressed file (or HuffYUV capture codec, search the forum), then convert it using TMPGEnc. Otherwise there might be some more artifacts introduced in the final piece. That's just my piece of advice, I'm sure others (more qualified) will mention their thoughts on the matter.

Sounds like a plan to me.

Using YUV captures with HuffYUV encodng will make the captures smaller by about half so that's a good methodology.

I'd also use AVI_IO to capture since it gives you the ability to capture long sequences as multiple files instead of being limited by the 2/4 gig limit.

Microsoft Video 1 is not MPEG-1. It's an old 8 or 16 bit codec that started in Windows 3.1. It doesn't really provide any usable quality compared to todays codecs.
