I've been developing with .Net for over two years now. It's slick and awesome.

Sure there are pluses and minuses but for a product at version 1.0, it does a lot more good than harm.

Visual Studio.Net is an IDE sent from heaven. I have very few problems with it. And it truly improves my productivity. Yet the biased writer only mentions it briefly and doesn't deign himself to mention it by name. All he says is: "It's a great development environment."

The guy who wrote the article is complaining that a language, C#, which was written specifically to produce .Net managed code, doesn't work like a language from the 60's. It's like complaining that you can't run a java app without a java virtual machine. They were specifically designed to be used together.

Well if he wants to write code that doesn't require the run-time, Microsoft's current solution is to use Visual C++, which also comes with Visual Studio.Net. It’s not so difficult to set the compiler to produce “unmanaged” executables. Microsoft says that they may extend unmanaged compiling to C# at some later date, but I think that their current solution is just fine.

Finally, it’s simplicity itself to add a “setup” project to your VS.Net solution and set it to include the .Net runtime. The setup program for his countdown app would have installed the runtime for him!

Well I don't like like .net for other reasons, I think just add the extra framework to tie down developers to what they want. I will stick dev studio 6 for a while yet thank you

I like how he was complaining about having to download patches for the OS. I guess he mustn't use ANY operating system for his computers, even Linux has an endless list of "patches" if you're starting from an old linux install disk you found in the corner of some cabinet.

Looks like they didn't understand .Net even though they'd been messing around with it. Why didn't they use another programming software just too write a countdown programme.

Also they didn't know how to keep windoze up todate.

I agree that the Visual Studio.Net IDE is great and I'm eagerly awaiting whidbey (new version of Visual Studio). Also C# is a good language with some nice things (altough it still has some minor annoyances).

But .Net has only one big disadvantage for me, .Net is a windows only lock-in product (altough Mono keeps getting better).

Luckily you can still use the new IDE to develop C++ programs. Our the excellent Eclipse for Java.
