  • Oscar nominations: 11 for LotR

As if there was any doubt, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King led the Academy Award nominations with a field-best 11 nods, including Best Picture, Best Director for Peter Jackson, Best Screenplay, and a veritable ton of technical nominations, including one for Best Song. Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World followed close behind with 10, while Cold Mountain and Seabiscuit grabbed seven apiece. Mountain, however, was shut out of the major categories, including Best Picture and Director, receiving nominations only for stars Jude Law and Renée Zellweger (sorry, Nicole!). In addition to ROTK, M&C and Seabiscuit, Mystic River (six nods) and Lost in Translation (four) rounded out the Best Picture race. There were expected nominees (Charlize Theron, Bill Murray, Diane Keaton) and not a few surprises, including Keisha Castle-Hughes' nod for Best Actress for Whale Rider, and a strong showing for City of God, which nabbed four nominations, including Best Director and Adapted Screenplay.

The Oscars are driven by everything BUT what it claims to award. If ROTK rolls and wins big it will be because it seems like the thing to do this year. That is why I attribute absolutely NO credence to these awards. After all, these are the people who gave the best director award to Steven Soderbergh for Traffic and snubbed Ang Lee for Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. It's just sickening.
