  • Mixing SATA and SCSI devices?

Ok, friend of mine just picked up a SATA 160gb drive and we connected it, it boots, but windows just won't see it. He also has two SCSI harddrives in his computer along with a 29160 Adaptec controller. Is this a possible configuration? Or will (as I much suspect) the SCSI controller override the BIOS for the Promise controller (onboard PDC20376 SATA controller for the Asus P4PE)? Any help would be appreciated. If all else fails, he'll return it and just get an IDE.

    Hi there.

I think it'll be fixed by configuring the boot sequence in the bios...

A got a SATAn 120 Gb disc and and Adaptec 2940U2W controller. All works fine. I am booting off of my SCSI now, but could boot from SATAn as well. Don't see a reason why it should not work.

Has the disk been partitioned and formatted? I seem to remember someone had an isue with that here. Also, if windows does see both controlleres, it should be fine.

Partition and format is my suggestetion:
      Start
      My Computer
      Control Panel
      Administrative Tools
      Computer Management
      Disk Management.

      You should see it here.

      Hope it helps.

That's the problem, is that I had him go EXACTLY there and it only displays his first two SCSI drives and his CD-ROM/DVD-ROM devices and that's it. So it's as if the controller's bios doesn't work unless he takes out his SCSI card. Because then it actually says something about the promise controller's Bios. Any suggestions?

All I can think of is to remove the scsi card and go into the bios of the promise card and make sure it is set to show its menu and be bootable.

Then put the scsi card back in and make sure the bios is set to non bootable, (scsi biso disabled ..etc)

But really you shouldbe able to choose the boot device in the bios. it may be tweakble by using some bios enable offboard PCI IDE /raid controler or something..

Another possibility is that it may be fixed with a motherboard bios update or possibly a bios update for the scsi or promise cards.

A card shuffle may be a long shot as well.

I was thinking perhaps the card shuffle idea would work. Or, like you said, switching off the Bios in the SCSI card. He boots his windows off of the SCSI device. He wanted the 160gb just for mass storage, so he can put his DVD projects on it and such. There is an option when you enable the SATA that says "boot ATA device first" but didn't know if that would be the option to use or not. I'll tell him to try it.
