  • Favorite DVD Playing software for Windows

Ok, PowerDVD and WinDVD annoy me for various reasons. What other options are there out there? At least in Linux I can just open up Xine which is pretty sweet. Any suggestions?

VideoLAN Client, or just VLC, is pretty sweet... And free..

I do actually have that one, but haven't really tried playing around with it for quite some time (back when it was first created, I tried it out in linux, and seemed to work pretty well.) I just watched Unusual Suspects in PowerDVD 5 and it seemed to work great for once... Lately with WinDVD and PowerDVD it would occasionally skip, but this time it seemed to run ok. I'll have to play around with it a while longer...

VLC all the way. Works with everything i've thrown at it until now (plays even the .bin files without the need to burn them on a cd or partial *ehm* downloaded *ehm* files).

PowerDVD5 is good, but since it has MAJOR issues playing SVCD's (corruption during playback), I am using WinDVD5.

PowerDVD 5.6.0.3 was just released, and it STILL has this problem. How can the Cyberlink people NOT see this issue during testing?

So is it worth having a go with the interVideo WinCinema (WinDVD/WinCoder/WinRip/WinProducer) that came bundled with my ASUS mobo? I haven't put any DVD software on the machine yet since the reinstall...

Here's some interesting bug I found for WinDVD 5 Platinum. I think it could be that WinCinema thing that it puts in the system tray, but could be wrong... but basically if you're playing Neverwinter Nights, then you put something under the CRTL+F1 shortcut and it will load up WinDVD RIGHT WHEN YOU'RE PLAYING THE DAMNED GAME! And of course wether it's NWN's fault or Matrox's fault with the Parhelia drivers, it messes up big time when you alt+tab or otherwise make NWN be minimized. The screen goes all screwy and you have to either change the resolution/refreshrate or just exit the game and reboot it. That's one of the main reasons I asked in the first place, is that WinDVD was annoying me. That and it doesn't remember what position I put the control thing in, it ALWAYS loads up with it inbetween my first monitor and my second monitor...
