Received a few strange spreadsheets with buttons on the side bars (see below, Ca only manage to save as bmp here) all they seem to do is hide/unhide cells, in this case anyway, although there must be a real use for them.

Anyone know what they are called/how to create so I can look them up?

They are there to group/ungroup cells as you have noticed. You can nest them to several levels and use them horizontally and vertically. They can be v. useful in neatening up a spreadsheet and allowing people to drill down in eg a P&L statement...

Menu: Data --> Group and Outline gives you the relevant options to manipulate them, and you can put these buttons on your toolbars which is more useful...

      Cheers GNEP

These spreadsheets are not using them for anything useful, finance guys, hiding empty rows or one row with data. (4 ,4, 5, 4, 4, 5 etc)

I'm sure I will find a use for them though.
