Is it just me, or do software companies just suck anymore? I have not seen a decent RPG in a long time.

This is the one game I have been awaiting since a long time. It was going to be 3d (yet look like fallout), you could forge your own weapons and get add-ons (scopes, bayonets...), you could lure people into dark corners and kill them silently without the whole town noticing at once and going after you...

Damn! I want X-Com 3, Fallout 3, and Jagged Alliance 3. Then I'll shut up

That's because game play design has taken a back seat to feature creep for a number of years now for nearly all types of computer games.

Prime example would be Diablo II, where they ruined the simple and addictive fun that was Diablo.

This reminds me, I'd like another Commander Keen, please. Just like 4, only running on XP.

                  Exactly!!!!!!!!
With fancy graphics, but then they'd start working on the graphics and stop working on making the maps new and good.

I don't think I've seen a really good CRPG since Ultima 7! Maybe some of the Dungeon Master clones too. But really, ever since around the days of the first Diablo, RPG's have been toned down and lame. Even Fallout 2 sucked....

This is happening all over the industry. Big business, Ivy League, MBA, money grubbing, bastards have started dipping their filth into the very lucrative video game market. Believe it or not, one of the few major distributors that let companies do their own thing is Microsoft and Activision. EA, Interplay, Akklaim and the rest are starting to force game dev's to 'make more money' than make better, new games.

Yes, Vivendi was even putting pressure on Blizzard, which is why the four founding members left.

I remember the close combat series.

CC3 was great (2 was OK)

4 was good, but had a flaw in the initial distrobution - EVERY european CD was duff....

CC5 and the company was gone.... Atomic games, I think - its been so long....

I blame a lot of the suckage on 3D graphics. Or should I say the ASSUMPTION that every new game HAS TO be 3D. 3D pretty much ruined the entire RTS genre. EVERYthing just HAS to be 3D nowadays. Damn fools. I bet if Blizzard came out with a sequel to Starcraft that was 2D, no one would complain (except idiots of course).

hey, if you're going to have graphics, 3D is kind of the way to go now. And it makes sense.

I love Starcraft, and the looks are fine for me, but that's because I'm used to them. I'd love to play it at a higher resolution, but I can't. And it will slow down even on a fast machine if there's too many sprites on screen (3D can just alter the LOD). Can't zoom in, can't change the angle to see what's going on when the screen is flooded, can't see the Protoss behind that tree, et cetera. These limits and more we've just come to accept, but it would be nice if they were gone.
