  • Winamp 5.0 RC8

    Edit:
It uses 50 to 70 percent CPU on my Athlon 600 without any visualizations and has ghosting problems but the classics skins work unlike Winamp 3.

For me, it sort of got ironed out since beta 2. Sure is better than Winamp 3.
As for CPU usage, well, it does go up to 1% sometimes.

I just tried it again and it's working at 14% max.

I have an Athlon 750 and there is no cpu usage issues here. Hangs around 2-4% when listening to music. Of course that number balloons up to 65% when streaming a live concert through their internet television stations.

edit: I can only watch high bitrate music videos with the classic skin. The modern skin is a nice skin, but the performance hit is big when watching video.

Hmm. Now at a max of 4%. What the heck. This is without rebooting. SO nothing could have been cleared up that way. Actually, now that I think about it, it could have been trying to auto-update during the almost high % usage.

I just tried watching the streaming videos through it, and had 0% CPU usage from it Of course I do have a P4@3.06ghz with Hyperthreading....

Somehow that avataar perfectly fits that comment.

Hmm, so is the general consencus that it's better than Winamp 2?

Started running it this weekend. Works like a champ. It supports inpu/output plug-ins like MAD plug-in, unlike 3. Slightly higher memory footprint, but not bad. I like it. I think I'll keep it.

...slightly higher memory footprint, but you get SO much stuff as a trade-off.

Just so long as they keep it from getting Winamp3-bloated.

ACDSee has suffered from feature creep. ACDSee 3 was ... buggy and intolerable. It took them until ACDSee 6 to get fast again.

                          I run ACDSee 2. :-)

I'll wait until 5 is out of beta, and then get it. I'm in no rush yet.

It's very nice. Now to see how annoying the update to pro version thing is. It doesn't seem to be a bother so far so the only problem I currently have is the ghosting/trails/flickering which is very minor now anyway.

Anyone know what the min specs are for the program? I remember when I first tried 2.X it could even run on my P90 as long as there were no visualizations. This loooks to need a good bit more.

I've been running Winamp 5 since beta 1 as my full time media player. It has all the good parts from 2 and 3, with very little of the bad. RC8 is a major improvement over beta 2, which was already very good. If your machine is a little slow, just run a classic skin and it should perform as well as winamp 2. If you've got GHz to burn, use a modern skin.
