  • Sh!t D@mn #%*& !!!!!

    Yesturday I got a bargain I couldn't refuse: Abit AT7-MAX2 for around $80.

Problem: As soon as I turned it on - "cmos checksum failure "

Press Del and then load up bios defaults or remove battery for a bit.

      Tried both.
Tonight I'll remove battery for half an hour and hope for good.

usually there's a jumper for clearing CMOS completely.

hit your manual for that and try updating with a fresh version afterwards

Done and done yesturday night. Neither helped.

If I won't find a way to fix it myself this weekend, I'll leave my computer at the store so they replace my board, I don't feel like de-reconstructing my computer all over again.

I forgot to add that if I hit [Del], I get a blank screen with a blue line at the bottom and the computer hangs.
Sometimes if won't even post afterwards till after a few retries (read: on-offs).

I've posted my ordeal on Abit's support forums and according to their advices, tonight I'll:

                1. Remove power cord
                2. Verify Strapping Jumper position (1-2)
                3. Remove CMOS battery
                4. Move the CMOS jumper to Clear the CMOS

                5. Go to practice (~ 1.5 - 2 hours, shower included)

                6. Disconnect everything except for CPU, 1 memory module, Graphic adapter, Powe supply (D'oh) and Keyboard (D'oh)
                7. Return CMOS jumper and battery
                8. Connect power cord and boot.

If I'm still unable to enter setup, I'll RMA it next week.

Sounds like bad caps to me. I had a BE6-II doing the same thing once... Changed the caps and eveything worked like a charm...

                        Not the caps again.

At work MSI have the same problem plenty of blown caps.

FWIW, it's not just Abit and MSI...there was a huge lot of bad caps sent to vendors industry-wide.

Don't have specifics, but I personally do know of a LOT of brand spanking new Computers/servers that are proactively getting motherboards replaced that are merely "suspect", not necessarily bad, on warranty from IBM and it is because of Caps.

Local Vendors here report intermittent problems with Shuttle, MSI, Abit, and Iwill.

Flash it. No no - keep your clothes on! Get the latest BIOS for that mainboard and flash it. Don't reboot - flash it again, and again, and again. Try flashing it 5 times and see if it makes a difference.

And check your local dollar store for suitable batteries
