I've been doing some performance testing of TMPGENc.
CQ mode at 75
Field A
MPEG level II audio 224kbps
slowest 702sec 57433kb
slow 450sec 36% faster 60001kb 4.5% larger
normal 347sec 51% faster 61487kb 7.1% larger
fast 279sec 60% faster 64323kb 12.0% larger
fastest 259sec 63% faster 71983kb 25.3% larger
The interesting thing is that the file size becomes larger as the speed decreases. I am thinking that perhaps in order to keep the CQ75 equal for all motion search speeds that the file size increases to offset lessened motion search?
Anyway, if you need the best quality for the file size go with slowest, slow and normal are all very good, being much faster with only a little larger file size. Finally, stay away from fast and fastest, not much speed improvement and the file size starts to grow like mad, especially at the fastest setting.
For the record, I used the rendered DV test file from my MSP7 benchmark site. My system is a P4 2.4B 533fsb.
Finally, I'm having a bit of a problem with TMPGEnc, every time a render finishes the program closes. I can't seem to find a setting to turn this action off in any menu. ???
