  • Linux-How do I found out what Xfree86 version I have?

    title says it all

It's things like this that drives me bonkers about Linux. Also, is it referring to the compiled kernel version???

It should be the very first thing listed in your xfree log.
    On my system:
    less /var/log/XFree86.0.log

What is referring to compiled kernel version?

Alternatively, run xdpyinfo (within X while it's running) and look at the first few lines of output. (xdpyinfo | head if you like).

Now what's your concern about the compiled kernel version?
Blah blah blah nick blah blah confusion, blah blah blah blah frog.

ok, so I finally download the linux ati driver and try to install it. This is what I get:

              [root@localhost ati]# rpm -i --force fglrx-glc22-4.3.0-3.2.8.i586.rpm
*** Trying to install a precompiled kernel module.

You must go to /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod subdir
and execute './make.sh' to build a fully customed kernel module.
Afterwards go to /lib/modules/fglrx and run './make_install.sh'
in order to install the module into your kernel's module repository.
              (see readme.txt for more details.)

As of now you can still run your XServer in 2D, but hardware acclerated
OpenGL will not work and 2D graphics will lack performance.

              failed.

I am so lost. All help appreciated.

Ah, Linux (and Unix too), the OS designed by people who hate knowing that other people might understand how to use it.

You must go to /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod subdir

                  ./make.sh

yes that is exactly what you must do, but install your kernel source first..

                  what distro do you have?

If you know what kernel version you have there should be an RPM with the same name and -source in the name. I think that is what Marshmallowman is referring too.

Anywho, RPMs were always odd to me.
