Allright, I get a bit grumpy when reading about this sort of thing.

A coworker of mine was killed, slowly, by one of her daughters classmates.
Why?
He had eaten mushrooms (cillocybine) at a party.

Apparently she had pledge for her life, and tried to escape, but collapsed in her garden (from bloodloss). He killed her with a pair of schissors.

Now this dumb **** tried to plead not guilty, on account of having eathen these mushrooms - "I didnt know what I was doing" - he said.
Well, thats YOUR problem, not mine, answered the judge - and gave him life.

The plant in question is datura meteloides. It is a really beautiful white flower that grows abundantly in the Mojave desert, best seen in April after some rain, where I believe it is called the Jimsonweed. All parts of the plant are extremely toxic. It belongs to the Solonaceae family, which also includes the potato, capsicum peppers and tomato, as well as some other highly toxic plants, such as the deadly nightshade. Another toxic variety, growing also in SW USA is datura innoxia, as well as the thorn apple, datura stramonium. Hybrid daturas (also toxic) are grown as garden flowers, usually in shades from white to pink to red. The principal toxin is belladonna, from which various drugs, such as hyoscine, hyoscyamine and atropine, are derived. Some plants also have other alkaloids. such as scopolamine and the henbane, a related species, which is rich in the latter, has been used in S. Asia for smoking and as an infusion, as well as a painkiller.

The real problem with daturae and related plants is that the quantities and proportions of the alkaloids vary enormously, so that a lethal dose from one plant (possibly as little as a few tens of milligrams of plant matter) may be totally harmless from another plant of the same species. Dosing of the effect of a plant is therefore impossible.

Castaneda wrote about some effects of the Datura plant (refered to as "Devil's weed") in his first book...they were pretty wild in there as well. Has it only become popular now in Europe?
