  • Use for an old laptop?

    I have an old P133 (80Mb RAM) laptop running win95 that I have just managed to resurrect.

    It has no direct internet connection (I don't have a PCMICA ethernet card lying around, so have connected with DCC over a parallel (laplink) cable) - DCC has problems with TCP/IP in win95, and so it's filesharing only with a machine that's then got broadband from the router.

    What distributing project might be suitable/best? (And of use to MURC)? The laptop doesn't meet the minimum requirements of distributedfolding, and nowhere near for climateprediction (my two other current projects) - SETI maybe (I think I have another machine elsewhere sitting crunching WUs for me) - but how does this work with no direct internet access?

    Any other suggestions?

    It's not quick, but it's better to use it than not and it can be on 24/7 unlike my other machines (noise).

      Interesting. Actually looking at my own username that I set up on another computer elsewhere, if I do SETI I may as well bung it on there - it's got to 78 WUs in a year so I might push it to 100 with the P133

      Any tips on working completely offline (ie even for the install of SETI)?

      Or any other projects?

        There are many programs that do that but personaly I use a .bat file for it and upload manualy!

            You could try distributed.net too, it supports sneakernet and is happy to run a lower end systems.

              Oh and with an old P133 there is now use in having a 70 WU cache 5 should be enough!

                Actually for a laugh I just copied over a distributedfolding folder from the machine I recently moved to climateprediction - and it seems to run (slowly, but it's running, with net access turned off)...

                I'll see how that goes for a day or 2.

                  Remember to turn off the "use extra ram" switch since the laptop only haves 80MB RAM!

                    Oh don't worry I did. It's now doing about 1 gen every 2 hours (do I get the record for having the slowest DF machine?)
