  • Odd window shown on XP login...

I have just recenly seen the following show up on my PC when I log-in. I am EXTREMELY hesitant to hit rename as I know there is no folder other than C:\Program Files in my C: drive. What is this and where did it come from?

I am running XP SP1 and the most recent thing I've installed is Steaminstall_CS.

I'm totally perplexed by this. The system seems to be working fine when I hit the ignore button.

You got a decent and up-to-date virus util on that machine? - If so run that as an urgent starting point for investigations.

Sometimes after you install or upgrade a program, if something goofs up, a message box will appear like that. Pop open regedit and go to:

        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

Look for any app that has been removed or updated and delete it.

the installer of a program has made a folder named "program" instead of "program files"

probably a program that don't read the localised strings in registry

check wich program that is installed in that folder, deinstall it and delete the folder and the errormsg should go away

I think also if a file is created called program files you get the same error. Sometime ago since I've seen this.

@Jammrock: I checked the registry, nothing totally out of the ordinary.

@Technoid: No new folders that were called Program are on my C: drive or ANY drive for that matter.

@The Pit: Took your advice and I did find a file called Program (no extension) in my C: drive. You suggest deleting it to get rid of that message?

99% of the time you should be safe to do so. Just rename it and if everything works okay then delete it.
