The first generation Orbs had problems, to their credit, Castlewood seems to have exchanged all defective drives without hassle.

5.7 GB is still not big enough to archive DV which is ~13GB/hr. Could be usefull to stor MPEG2 while waiting for DVD-R to get reasonable in price if the cost per disk is "reasonable".

Orb could also be used to capture footage directly given the transfer rate.

Pricewise I agree that this is not the best choice for capturing : I tried to find the break-even point between an Orb at $200 with $30 5.7GB media (really very very very optimistic here) and gave up after I found that even a Maxtor DiamondMax80 HD is still relatively cheaper.

If you only consider it for archiving it could be comfortable solution in terms of speed : 5.7GB is the equivalent of 8 CDs and if the 12MB/s is sustained on the Orb you could backup about 25min of DV footage in 10 minutes, which is currently not possible with CDRW,DVD-RW or probably even DV-in !?
