  • Wright brothers photo collection.....

Given the 100th anniversary of the Wright brothers flight the Frank Coffyn collection of photographs etc. has been put online.

Frank Coffyn flew with the Wright brothers early on. Cool stuff for aviation freaks.

Is there a place where I could get more info on the engine used?

No, just interested in seeing what kind of technology was used back then and I want to compare it to today's engines. just curious, that's all.

Go out side & look at your lawn mower.
          Now look at your car.

            My lawn mower is electric....

So it's that simple of a design? Hmmm. (a 2 stroke?)

Actually the Wright Flyers engine was pretty modern for 1903; a water cooled inline four cylinder four stroke that put out 12 hp.

It was certainly simpler than todays engines of that type, but no mechanic could mistake it for anything else. Makes you respect their engineering achievements even more.

              Enough?

Well, it is a pre-flathead design.
But, I expected opposed 2 and air cooling.
In-line 4 and water cooling is pretty impresive for the time.
                Nice links.

You would be suprised how much more power those old engines could produce if they were set for use with cleaner better fuels....as is they can run reliabley on some pretty mucky stuff.

I don't think the 12hp really tells all the tale. With the long stroke design it had I'm sure it produced a ton of torque, which at low RMP's is more important than horsepower.
