    My bet is that USB-2 will eventually win this battle IF it works as advertised.

    Beyond that there is another possible contender, even if it's an unintended one: SerialATA.

    SerialATA is the next "IDE" connection beyond ATA100, but instead of a ribbon cable it uses a very Firewire-like cable.

    Self powered and capable of 1.5 to 6 gigabits/sec transfer rates it may well move from inside the box to an outside storage connector because of its open standard status and ability to treat anything as a tape or hard drive transparently.
