  • Help with mobile processor

    Hello,

I own a rather old Dell laptop (Inspiron 3200).

I've seen on the Dell forum that it is possible to upgrade the CPU (PII 233 - MMC-1 form)

I've found PII 400, Celeron 300 and Celeron 366 in MMC-1 form on eBay.

Which processor would be the most powerfull ?

The laptop is used as an MP3/MPC/APE... player, CD ripping/encoding, office work (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, ...).
I'd like to be able to read divx

    Config is : PII 233, 144Mo, 20Go HDD.

    Thanks

I guess the PII 400 would be the best choice. You'll need all the power to play your divx movies.
    Main: Dual Xeon LV2.4Ghz@3.1Ghz | 3X21" | NVidia 6800 | 2Gb DDR | SCSI
    Second: Dual PIII 1GHz | 21" Monitor | G200MMS + Quadro 2 Pro | 512MB ECC SDRAM | SCSI
    Third: Apple G4 450Mhz | 21" Monitor | Radeon 8500 | 1,5Gb SDRAM | SCSI

you did check that the CPU in the laptop is not soldered onto the board I hope...

he said it was an MMC1 form factor. should be "cartridge-like" if my memory serves me right...

You're right Kurt it's a cartidge-like processor. Actually, the processor is soldered on a small card with other chips. And the card is simply inserted in a slot on the motherboard.
The processor I've ordered is exactly the same
I have already tried to remove my current processor and it was pretty easy

PS: my processor has left the US tonight, so it's on a plane right now
