So... uhm, when does it start cooling my CPU better than the stock intel one? Granted I put Arctic Silver on there, and I know it takes 72 hours to fully set in. (hopefully I didn't put too much on.....) Right now it's running at 131 F (55 C) Whereas before, I had it running at about 125 F (don't recall the celsius)

By the way, the heatsink is badass, but the documentation could use a bit more polishing..... well for that matter, they could actually consider providing SOME.... I had to log onto the net with a different computer and print it off their website. Then of course there are at least three different sets of instructions without them clarifying very well which one you should use for which situation. Finally I found it and kind of sort of installed it without a hitch. now if I can actually see some good improvements with the heatsink. (although it is quite noticeably quieter.)

Well, it depends on what fan you're using, what is it?

It's an Enermax Ultra-cool 80mm fan. It has a little thermal sensor on it.

I have the SLK900u with a 92mm Enermax adjustable fan on it. I've never had better.

This subject comes up again and again. Take a look here.

          those temps are kinda high!
are you 100% sure you assembled it correctly?

I'm using a Alpha 8942, a blue version of this 80mm fan and some Artic Alumina and both the P4 2.4B and 2.4C I just switched to would top at around 46C.
Haven't tryed the stock cooler that came with the 2.4C to compare heatsinks.

It is installed properly. Though I noticed when I popped off the heatsink to make sure everything was on there right, it looked as if the little Arctic silver I put on there wasn't quite enough, and that the pressure between the CPU and the Heatsink may have squished most of it out, or something. There was an almost complete bald spot in the middle of where the CPU is. I put a little bit more on there and now it is running at 122 F, though granted I have a tone of things loaded. Well ok, it's fluctuating between 122/120 F. I had it as low as 113 when it's cold in my room (I have the case off right now, it goes up about 5 F if I put the side on.)

Ambient temp plays a big role. We have an unusually hot summer right now, and I have to leave the side off too. As long as the blankety-blank alarm doesn't go off, I'm happy. Running Adaware seems to peak the heat.

If you look at that bald spot under a 8X lens, you'll probably see a fine layer of paste. The paste is only there to fill and conduct where the two metal surfaces don't quite touch and conduct heat. Your bald spot is probably the place where the contact was best. Too much paste will interfere with contact and conduction.

I tend to get more fanatical about heat than my CPU, which just keeps chugging merrily along. Unless you are getting quirks and crashes, all is most likely ok.

I'm thinking it is at least 5 F colder than it ever used to run. Now when I have a game running it only goes up to 140 rather than 145-150. MBM would start the alarm at 158, which before I put a little bit more on, it actually hit! So it looks like it's working pretty well now... if only my air conditioner wasn't pushing out warm air most of the time. (that's what I get for living on the western side of the house, in a room that's surrounded by brown brick. It gets so freakin' hot in my room you could cook eggs on the window ledge.)

Also my question is, with the fan, should it blow downwards (like it's doing now, and it did on the Intel heatsink) or blow upwards? Right now I have it blowing down, but of course there's no guard on it from that side.....

Good, 'cause that's the way I have it facing now, just want to make sure all elements are covered. I'm wondering now exactly why the copper area does NOT cover the entire CPU core. I would say maybe a milimeter on either side aren't covered by the core of the heatsink.

Right, down. Consider geting the Enermax 92mm fan with speed control pot. It can be adjusted to run at a higher or lower rpm according to circumstances, like hot weather, and because of it's size, tends to move the hot air out or the whole CPU area.

Ha! Identical post times. See if it happens again.

I'm not going to pull the HSF to look, but I'm sure my P4 3.06 core is covered. When you pull the sink, you might have some paste squidge that makes it look like it's not quite covered, but I'm sure the core is.
