  • Matrox P/Px50 vs the Competition...

    1. ebay seems to be selling P's for around $215 or so...
so unless P750's go for around $110 or so, or something
significantly less than $215 at least, I think the P might still
be a better deal, especially if the P750 are going for ~$200...

    2. I'd like to know if there's some sort of passive cooling
that can be used with P750, or if the fan can be safely
    disabled...

    3. For TripleHead, what's the max res. and refresh rate for
the third display? Isn't it Analog-Digiital-Analog as the only
    configuration for triple head available?

    4. Just how much better is the 2D performance and IQ of P750
vs G550/G400MAX? How about vs Parhelia?

Is the 2D performance and IQ noticeably superior to cards
such as Leadtek Ti4x00 series which use high-quality filters?
FiringSquad says it's hard to tell the difference between Matrox
and Leadtek, but is that the case at higher res.? If there is
an improvement, will you notice on an LCD display? If on CRT,
would you only notice on a high-end display?

I have compared G400MAX IQ with RADEON 8500 on 15" Samsung 151s LCD, which is analog, and cannot tell the difference between the two in IQ. Colors, sharpness, etc.,
all seem to be darn close, but 8500 is of course much faster
    in 3D.

So... if you need DUAL DISPLAY capability, unless you need DUAL DVI, Leadtek Ti4x00 and Radeon 8x00 (and likely 9x00) seem to be comparable to Matrox in IQ and 2D performance at least at 1024x768 on a 15" LCD, and a Leadtek or ATI will cost less than P or Px50 while providing much better 3D for gaming.

I think it comes down to what you need... if you need dual DVI, I suppose Matrox is one of the few providing that. If you need triple head, ditto... If you need dual head with 2 analog, or 1 dvi and 1 analog, I don't know if Matrox still has much of an edge over the competition...

You must also take into the account the allround look&feel of Matrox drivers and few gadgets that are hard to live without if you got used to them using G series cards...

      Hello,

I compared a lot of video cards. The main purpose was to find the best home theater solution. I'm now happy with the old G400 because of his great TV-OUT (SCART RGB).

Before I tested ATI Radeon 7500, Leadtek A280 Ti4200 8X, and the latest : ASUS FX5200. But I was always disapointed with the TV-OUT quality of those cards : very bad !

Because I bought all these cards (the cheapest was the G400 on ebay !), I made a lot of A/B tests with the same TV, but also the same monitor (NEC Multisync HR17 1600x1200, 85Hz, analog - a very good piece of hardware).

All I can say now is that Matrox has really, really the best PQ not only on TV, but also on the NEC monitor. The Leadtek A280 LE TD was not sharp at all when compared to rasor sharp PQ of the G400 (At the beginnig of the tests I had 2 monitors and I thought it was a focus adjustment problem on the 2nd monitor !!!)

The bright colors of the matrox on monitor and on TV surprised me, because I was accustomed to the fade colors of the Leadtek and the ATI.

      So my hit parade is:

1-Matrox best PQ on monitor, better colors, only viable TV-OUT
2-Ati good PQ on monitor, acceptable PQ on TV
3-Leatek and Asus. Very blurry PQ on monitor, even worse on TV

Ok, I'm not a gamer at all, but every time I work with my PC or looking a DVD, my eyes are saying thank you.

      Have now a Leadtek A280 Ti4200 8X to sell (6 months). Who wants ?

I also hope that newer Matrox products have this same 2D quality.

I too would like to know how the P-series TV-OUT compares to G400 series...

Yes. Some lucky guys on this forum are running P750 benchs.

To these guys I would say : please include some PQ comparisons and TV-OUT jugments.

I'm on the way to build a new HTPC. P650 passive cooled can be a good choice.

For those who are interrested in TV-Out quality comparisons, just check out this link below (in german) it compares ATI/NVIDIA/MATROX TV-OUT with explicit pictures (exactly what I found with my own tests).

          Thanks
