  • Stick with G400 or swap to (free) G550?

    My server has an old G400 in it, running Win 2K server, 2*17" CRTs @ 1024*768*16bit @ 85Hz on a PIII 1GHz.

A G550 Retail will be popping along shortly, target machine is a PIII 450MHz, Win 2k Pro, 1*17" + 1*19" (or maybe 17"), image quality is not a big issue.

Would it be worth my effort (from my point of view anyway) swapping the G550 for my G400?

    TIA

    T.

You should stick with the G400, one it is a more powerful 3d card(can play games better) and it's 2D is the same as the G550, as I have tested them.

Thanks. I guess the most appropriate question was 'which has the best 2D?'. I don't think I'll have time for any ButtCasting

For the regular usage, G400 is similar to G550. If you want to use LCD + DVI output, G550 is definitely the better choice. The DVI output support on G400 does not seem as flexable as G550's ?

G550's DVI aside, G400 is the best of the G series cards. Best 3D performance, best TV out.
Of the G400/450/550, G400 is the only one I still have in service here. G450 and 550 have been handed down to family/friends, while G400 keeps pluggin along in my kids/home entertainment PC (mainly for it's TVout)

In Fat Tone's scenario, there is not much reason to swap or NOT to swap... because they are basically the same when not playing games, not using DVI, not using TV-out and not using headcasting.

                So, save some troubles
