  • Munich now Open Source

    Read it here

If you dont speak german, use a translator.

Says that Munich will start updating their 14000 PC's to Open Source OS and Office Software.

The reason is a quality/price estimate they made. After Microsoft made them new, cheap offers, they still decided for linux because of the Quality

  • #2
Are you sure Price wasn't a big part of that equation.

Personal that is the only real bonus I see to Linux.

My Win2k setup never crashes, no matter what I do with it, 3D rendering, web work, games etc. Therefore I personally cannot think of any reason other the cost to go the Penguin route.

Yeah, Microsoft offered them drastically cheap licenses, and even made a last minute offer AFTER the time limit to make such offers was reached

And it is pretty proven that Linux is both safer and more stable than Windows.

Using WinXP myself, and Im pretty happy with it, but I still appreciate this decision very much. Also Linux will probably be much cheaper in the long run, so the city can spend their money on important things (which doesnt mean they will, though )

"Quality". This is like when Dilbert's company said that their slogan is "Quality", but their keyboards all shipped without the letter "Q", so they had to change their slogan to "Uality!".

The CSU is the bavarian part of the large conservative party in Germany, the CDU. The CSU is even more conservative and right-leaning than the CDU (the Party of ex-chancellor Helmut Kohl).

Other important parties in germany are the SPD (Chancellor Schröder - mid-to-left, but really rather in the middle, this once WAS the workers' party, opposition to the NSDAP, etc.), and the Greens (Fischer - they once were a bunch of long-haired hippies, now they are mostly like all other parties are, just a little more left leaning). There are some others, but they're not that important at the moment

Umm... you have to use codeweaver software.

I'm not interested in running a Windows emulator under Linux to get access to Windows Apps. I'm interested in real apps being available for Linux.

                        Adobe ain't gonna support it.

Adobe will support Linux when they beleive it is advantegous for them....the Acrobat Reader supports every machine under the sun exactly because they want everyone to use Acrobat to create widely available documents... I'd say either Linux needs a good replacement for Photoshop or a big enough groups of Adobe's PAYING customers has to demand it.... Then they will make a Photoshop for Linux... IMHO anway.

Gee, it's a shame that the mighty gurm thinks of it as emulation. Since Wine is not an emulator. It's an API layer. After it's installed, you don't even notice that you're running a windows app in linux. In fact Photoshop goes right on your menu (at least it did for Gnome 2.2 on debian.) I don't need windows on my system or anything.

Indeed Adobe will need to see that there is a reason to port it over to linux. If a lot of their customers start switching to linux, then they will do a native port, but until then, I think Codeweaver's crossover office will do nicely.

You've got to remember, that Wine doesn't emulate any architecture, since it's running on the same hardware as windows. (Of course Wine only works on x86 architectures)

It works quite fast, though I'm sure a lot of the speed would be different had I actual LINUX drivers for Parhelia! (yeah, so I'm getting a little impatient....)
