  • The good old days- free beer on IRQ 10

Today I added more memory, a USB 2.0 card, and a 10 gig hard drive based demountable MP3 player for the car into my desktop machine. The first two went in Ok, I inserted the drive and rebooted, not detected, a bit of tinkering later and I corrupted my primay master: no sys.ini detected. Re-install windows and I have no less than 13 devices assigned to IRQ 10, ahh this brings back memories...
For some reason my Marvel G200 won't run at higher than 16 colours and 640x800 now
A bit of IRQ juggling ahead I think.

I think the free beer usually was on IRQ 11
    (not that it matters much)

Unless it's Win 98, could it be that you installed the OS in ACPI mode, somehow left the ACPI setting enabled in the bios and/or didn't choose to install as standard PC during setup ?

Zokes, you betray your youth, my young padawan

Way back when, the latest generation of Matrox cards, the G200 series, especially the Marvels, used to be very selfish about sharing an IRQ with anything.

Back then this board was full of "free beer on IRQ *" questions, to get your card onto it's own IRQ, so I can't claim the phrase for my own.

            I'm still stuck on 16 colour, 640x800

No worries, I'll be back for help tomorrow if I can't figure it out, after all it all worked this morning

It's time for a game of PCI card Shuffle!

Brings back memories from the good old time

I'll have to do that as well, because my Audigy is not a sharer

You may not be able to claim that saying as your own, but at least your THE first to intrduce it to me!

All I need to do now is find a way to find Dave's IRQ 10 so I can snag myself some free beer!

@ Technoid: PCI Card Shuffle, I like that saying too! It makes troubleshooting seem like a game you'd find in a Casino!

well, that used to be one of the usual advices : shuffle the pci cards around and see if it works then

This really brings up some great memories

Every board I own I shuffle cards through until I figure out their interrupts. Makes it nice when building a system. And the beer never gets flat fiddling around at a crucial moment.

                        haha,

Your first problem is that you are running windows 98SE. I have found that just to be extremely dodgy. Especially the audio support in it just crashes/burns/dies randomly. I suspect the WMA crap was very buggy.

Your second problem is that .... ummmmm .... uhhhhhh.

I'm not quite sure how to take that

Well I'm back, I now have 14 devices on IRQ 10, but everything is working fine (unlucky 13 maybe). I think the problem was that in the re-installation of W98SE it dropped the matrox drivers, even though it claimed to be still using them. Uninstalling the drivers through Windoze and re-installing the drivers didn't work. Wiping everything off with the matrox uninstall utility, letting it boot as a standard PCI vga card, installing the latest unified drivers, then cramming them repeatedly down W98SE's throat, until it gave up and decided to use them worked.

And I got the MP3 car player drive working too

It clearly said "put it on the secondary IDE as a master "USING THE SUPPLIED CABLE"" but I arrogantly assumed the one that was already there would be fine, apparently I was wrong.
