  • Speed up your DSL connection!

This only applies to people with a DSL modem that uses PPPoE.

I've just recently downloaded a new driver for PPPoE DSL modems, called cFos. This driver has one neat feature called traffic shaping, which handles different packets with different priority. The effect is that uploads and downloads have almost no impact on your ping and surfing speed anymore. With my old standard DSL driver, I couldn't really surf anymore, because I've had to wait several seconds after clicking a link until a site even started loading. With this driver, surfing is almost as fast with up- and downloads as it is without.

My connection is 768/128k ADSL (96/16K). I'm downloading with 77K and uploading with 10K (plus overhead) in Overnet (way better than edonkey/emule btw, and uses the same temp files) at the moment, and surfing is way faster with this driver than it was with the standard driver with even half the up and download.

This driver costs some money, but for people having up- or downloads running in the background, it's really worth it (and has a free trial period).

I already do this using my linux gateway computer.

Linux traffic shaping is very advanced, and rather difficult to get right, but it gives excellent results.

This makes me happy that my ADSL do not use PPPoE

        Wow! Better than RASPPPoE? Excellent...

Err... wait I have a cable modem now. LOL.

Tech: Why are you happy that you can't use this optimization?

Gurm: It's WAY better than RASPPPoE from what I hear. It really feels as if my line is twice as fast now!

I agree with Rugger. Linux traffic shaping just rocks. Though oddly, I still get better throughput when I'm using my linux box behind my linux box, rather than using windows behind my linux box.....

Hey, what can I say, linux's network code just plane smashes windows' network code to tiny little bits.

Disable windows QoS, if it is on

Doesn't look like QoS is on. (at least I'm guessing that's what QoS RSVP in the Services is) And I played with the MTU's a long time ago, but figured that extra few kb/s upstream in windows wasn't worth trying to dig for it again

Az how long did you test it already? Any other advantages?
I'm currently using RASPPPoE and it's running fine.

Tested it for a few weeks now. Haven't found any other advantages (I need no little skinnable status windows etc.), but surfing is really almost as fast now with transfers almost maxing out my line as it is without any transfers at all.

I'd give it a try - you can use it without doing any harm to RASPPPoE, and it's got a free trial period If it's bad, you can uninstall it.

My cable connection runs at least 2x as fast as DSL already

Never experienced slowdowns when surfing and dowloading lots of stuff

On work we have the same kind of conection and we can easily surf download and such at 4-5 computers at the same time without noticing any perceptible slowdowns

I also experience very good surfing speed while heavy downloading (with RASPPOE). Only my ping gets very high in games (150-250). So maybe this PPPoE driver will cure that little problem altough I doubt it.
