"But you still need QuickTime/RealOne to be installed."

If that's the case, wouldn't it be redundant?

Having to install QuickTime and RealPlayer is the problem!

Yeah, I don't care if we get a frontend, I want an independent codec that doesn't require the shitware from Apple or Real to be on my system. Doing this is like saying "well, if you swallow baking soda and then chug vinegar, your guts will explode... so just swallow the baking soda and instead chug this Pepsi..." your insides will probably STILL explode.

          I have spoken.

Not really. It's something that has been done before for video and audio. I'd just better assume using the original players and deal for the little I use them. I was actually told to install them where I work now on some machines and this is a mortgage company! Without any independant codecs/filters as Gurm stated, things like this are pointless. I just keep up to date version ready and make updating rounds every month or so.

As long as I have control, I can make it as secure/stable as possible.

Okay you can somehow just copy the DLL files I think.

the "Frontend mediaplayers" are becoming a bit overused......

a "mediaplayer" who dont use the inbuilt "windows drivers" at all would be a fun thing

It could use the DirectShow filters as a fallback. And it's fine to use codecs, that's why they're written. But yeah, a media player that wasn't just a directshow wrapper would be nice to see.

Nice, now if there could be an non-Apple Sorensen codec.
